This video shows the depths of lawlessness that has engulfed the country. That much is taken for granted and is not debatable. But what I find equally disturbing is the message that the video carries about the Lebanese society as a whole. The agrieved were not asking for government protection and enforcement of the law but were calling on their tribal, make that clan leaders to step up and protect them. We sure have failed to create, after more than sixty years, the feeling that we are a community and that the government is there to protect all of us. Its sad.

  2. Ghassan, you are right. But how to blame them when everyone knows that the Army is never going to move to stop a faction killing members of another one. As the May events have shown, tribal feelings are only justified by the inaction of the Army and its incapacity and absence of willingness to appall the rule of law. I am not saying that this is right. But I am saying: who is to blame? The unprotected victims? The institutions that are not doing their job? The murderers and their patrons abroad? A bit of the three?

  3. I agree with Alphast and would go even further and say that this is not the first time the army proves to be useless. Unfortunately it has been up to the citizens to defend themselves for a while now and this is why every Lebanese household has a weapon of some sort. The army is filled with unfit, uneducated, unpatriotic morons who only enlisted for the benefits. This army should be replaced.

Yeah why don't you guys have the army replaced by the FM guys who dragged a Shia soldier out his jeep the other and beat him up...Let them be the new army.

  5. Well, replacing the Army by a militia would be fighting evil with greater evil. An obvious mistake. The same mistake that so many made in the last years of Lebanon history.
