George Hawi Assassin "On the Run" - Updated!

Speaking on Lebanese television station, LBC, yesterday, Internal Security Forces (ISF) Chief Ashraf Rifi revealed that the ISF had been in pursuit of a man believed to have been behind the car-bomb assassination of ex-Communist Party chief-turned Syria critic, George Hawi, as well as numerous other explosions across the country. The identity of the man, now believed to have fled the country, according to Rifi, and all other information concerning his pursuit, has been shared with Interpol while Lebanese authorities continue to follow the case.

Rifi's statements came after a day in which explosives and detonators were found in three sites across the country, sparking fears of further attacks similar to the bus bombings that took the lives of 4 people and wounded 20 last Tuesday, February 13th.

Here's a hint for Interpol: look for him in Syria.

  2. Syria?

Unlikely. To take an example for Kamal Joumblat's assassination, he has been killed, his killers killed, and the killers of his killers killed.

  3. With due respect to Rifi,

Without further info, I don't believe anything.

He may be saying this as a way of saying that they have something on ONE of the many unresolved cases, just to calm people down.

I want names, arrests etc...before I believe these guys

  4. And today the internal security forces released the picture of a suspect in the Gemayel assassination. It's all over the newspapers in Beirut. Interesting.

I think Jeha's example should be applied to the man in the sketch.

  6. Smith and co,

The identity of the man, ...[SNIP]..., according to Rifi, and all other information concerning his pursuit, has been shared with Interpol

I am still confused. To me the above means, or very strongly suggests, that Rifi knows the man's identity.

Reading the update and having a sketch suggests they have no idea who he is, and only have a description (maybe).

If they know his name (and no picture), the name should be released.

Not sure which it is, though the safe bet in Lebanon is that they know jack-shit.

  7. The sketch is of a man involved in Pierre Gemayel's assassination not George Hawi's.

I've added the topic to the update now so that theres no further confusion.

In any case I agree with ACP's agreement with Jeha. Maybe its time we start looking in the obituaries in Syrian newspapers for people accidentally run over by trains and other 'suicide' victims.

  15. I found this ending paragraph in YaLibnan's article on Suleiman "mhayaj" Franjieh's latests interview, in which he revealed that he had information on the possible involvement of an LF member in the assassination of Pierre Gemayel, to be quite amusing:

Few in Lebanon take Suleiman Franjieh seriously . Analysts refer to him as the spoiled grandson of the former president Suleiman Franjieh who invited the Syrian troops to Lebanon in 1976 and who was the closest ally of Hafez el Assad , former Syrian president and father of current president Bashar.

    ...see what I mean?
